Abstract

Despite being preventable with vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV), and screening for and treatment of precancer, cervical cancer incidence and mortality remain high in low-resource settings. Rates of cervical cancer mortality could be reduced with improved, accessible screening tests. Here, we present work toward a low-cost HPV test that utilizes isothermal amplification and lateral flow detection for un-batched point-of-care testing. This proof-of-concept work focuses on detection of HPV 16 and 18 with plans to expand the test to detect additional high-risk HPV genotypes.
