Although there has been recorded use of submersibles for over half a century, there remains a lack of autonomous small-scale underwater vehicles with high manoeuvrability. This paper outlines the potential applications of such a design, the associated challenges, and a general methodology of adapting a small-scale ROV for autonomous use using system integration.
