Abstract

In the past months we have seen a strong acceleration of the work on 5GNR in standardization as well as in pre-development. At the same time the LTE track is continuing to evolve rapidly, often adopting the same technology concepts and use cases as 5GNR. As a result, the gap between the 4G LTE and 5G NR is narrowing in terms of performance and service offering.
Either way, many results from past years’ research are now finding their way into systems and standards, with a maturing technology.

Research will continue to be motivated by two types of gaps – the first being given by use cases which have so far not been served well by existing systems. Examples can be found in the area of low latency and ultra-reliable communications (URLLC).

The other type of gap relates to the performance of a maturing system: We will need to re-assess the margins for improvement that remain in the different technology blocks. One good example here is the adoption and optimization of ‘massive MIMO’ concepts, another one the upcoming multi-user techniques.
