Abstract

Traditional vaginal specula consist of a hollow cylinder with rounded ends, comprised of two (2) blades for vaginal insertion to dilate the vagina for cervical examination and collect tissue swabs for detection of the cervical cancer-causing sexually transmitted infection, Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The Advanced Speculum implements basic electronic components and techniques to assist in vaginal and cervical visualization and temperature measurement to aid in early detection of HPV and cervical cancer. Routine screening can prevent up to 80% of cervical cancers when abnormalities are identified at early stages.
