Abstract

This study examined the part played by light color on the impact of movement artifact in calculations of heart rate (HR) and normalized pulse volume (NPV) derived from photoplethysmograms (PPGs) obtained with an iPhone and the iPhysioMeter App. In 12 healthy volunteers we calculated HR and NPV from reflection mode PPGs recorded simultaneously at three different spectral regions (Red, Green, and Blue) at the same physical location. Under controlled motion it was found that HR and NPV could be obtained reliably and with good accuracy with all three colors but especially with green light.
